Research shows breast milk can protect newborns from Covid-19

New research from the HSE shows that breast milk is protecting newborns from the virus.

Covid-19 antibodies are being found in the breast milk of mothers who have had the virus or have been double jabbed.

South East Community Healthcare are highlighting the importance of breastfeeding with 62 per cent of women now breastfeeding in Ireland.

Speaking to Beat News, Siobhan Sinnott, Child Health Programme Development Officer says it's positive news;

"Breastfeeding gives your baby  the very best start in life and there's now emerging evidence to show that Covid-19 antibodies are present in  the breast milk of vaccinated mothers.

So, this research indicates to us that breast milk can protect babies from coronavirus where the breastfeeding mothers were recently vaccinated or have recently recovered from a Covid infection."

However, she also says there's still much to learn about the virus:

"This is new emerging evidence and it's new research so lets see what comes as the research goes on.

I would say it's very positive and it's indicating to us that in addition to the many benefits that we already know about, it seems to be that breast milk is also protecting the baby against Covid-19."
