South East residential centre fails to meet improvements requirement

A Kilkenny residential centre taken over by the HSE on court orders last year has failed to ensure adequate improvements.

That's after an unnanounced inspection of Our Lady's unit in at St Patricks Centre in February.

Last year, HIQA deeemed the unit at the privately-run centre outside Kilkenny City unfit for purpose, and the district court ordered the HSE to take it over.

The unit which was home to 28 residents was non compliant in areas such as healthcare, premises and governance.

Since then HSE have said staff numbers had increased and instances of peer to peer had decresed.

However a report released late last night says inspectors were not satisfied that "sufficient progress" had been made since last autumn.

Inspectors had significant concerns regarding the lack of suitable management arrangements to oversee the quality of care provided to residents.

HIQA say that, as a result, there were direct negative outcomes for residents.
