Taoiseach defends Fianna Fáil declaring itself as a charity

The Taoiseach has defended Fianna Fail declaring itself as a charity to run a lottery.

A lottery licence granted by the courts allows the party to charge 50 euro for a ticket, rather than a maximum of 10 euro under a permit from the gardaí.

The measure is meant to be reserved for charities, but Fianna Fail was granted a licence by the district court.

"All political parties raise funding within very strict frameworks that govern modern party political fundraising..." said Micheal Martin, who is also the Fianna Fail leader, as he defended the move.

"Our party applied for a licence to operate - to within a legal framework - which is the right thing to do, and the courts granted that licence."
