Task force to be set up in efforts to keep Carlow school open

Parents and students of Muine Bheag Vocational School have called last nights public meeting about its closure 'a step in the right direction'

The meeting was attended by the CEO of the ETB for Carlow-Kilkenny Cynthia Deane, who announced that a task force will be set up consisting of parents, staff and ETB board members

She also told the students and parents that she would do all that was possible to find a solution to the situation, and did not rule out the possibility of the school remaining open.

One 5th year student, Keith Hickey, told Beat News the meeting was positive, and hopes the school can still be saved:

'I have two little brothers, and I'd be hoping they can go through the same system I went through, doing the same subjects'

'It's there. The structures are there. It's just those small little changes that have to be made in order to keep our school going!'

Meanwhile, Lorraine Ryan of the parents action group campaigning against the closure said the school can be proud of its students for their efforts in keeping the school open:

'I think Cynthia Deane has left here in no doubt what a close knit community we are, and what fantastic students turn out at that school'
