Tattoo artists will be banned from using coloured ink from next week

From January 4th Tattoo artists in the EU will be banned from using coloured ink.

It's due to the bloc’s regulatory body for chemicals outlawing the 4,000 chemicals typically used in colourful tattoo ink as they say it could lead to cancer or genetic mutations.

Many of the chemicals used in this ink are already banned in products that are applied to the skin.

Ink suppliers were given a deadline of January 4 2022 to find REACH-approved chemicals to create colours, but tattoo artists say that suppliers have been slow on finding alternatives, meaning it is harder for many people to get colourful tattoos.

Many in the tattoo industry are concerned that this will greatly affect business, and encourage people to seek out black market tattoo artists.
