Tax Break plan for Irish emigrants comes under fire

Government plans to give emigrants tax incentives to bring them home are coming under fire.

The so called 'emigrants tax' is aimed at bringing highly skilled workers back to Ireland, which would see a special 30% tax rate offered to people earning over €75,000 in certain jobs.

But the scheme has been described as 'aerodynamic as a brick' by financial advisor Eddie Hobbs, with others such as Fianna Fáil and the Social Democrats expressing concern.

Liam Doran of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association - speaking at a protest earlier - said tax breaks might be needed, but not just for tech sector workers:

"That [plan] was targeted at high flying executives. This country needs these young people here to stay here. We'll have high flying executives, but no hospitals - as there'll be no nurses."
