Thousands donate towards cause of Waterford mother fighting rare brain tumour

The family and friends of a Waterford mother and cancer patient living with a rare and extremely aggressive form of brain tumour are raising funds to help prolong her life.

32-year-old Jamie Phelan from Waterford was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme just four weeks after giving birth to her fourth child in February of this year.

The average life expectancy of Jamie's condition is less than twelve months, with just 25% of patients surviving over one year, and 5% more than five years.

With Jamie's permission, friends and family are undertaking the fundraising campaign and appealing to people to donate whatever they can so that Jamie can access additional treatments that can help to prolong her life, specifically, a ground-breaking new immunotherapy treatment called DCVax which is expected to cost in excess €200,000.

DCVax creates personalised immune therapy made from each patient's own dendritic cells.

These cells are a type of immune cell that function to help the body's immune system recognise and attack tumour cells. The hope is that this treatment will significantly prolong Jamie's life so she can spend time with her young family
