Ukrainian President pleads with Russians to try help stop the invasion

Ukraine's President has pleaded with Russians to try to help stop the invasion and "overcome evil".

Volodymyr Zelenskyy's called for people not to "stay silent" - his message coincides with anti-war protests in 29 Russian cities.

A monitoring group claims more than 1,000 people have been detained during demonstrations in the last 24 hours.

Pope Francis has rejected President Putin's claim about his forces being involved in a military operation - instead calling the conflict a "war".

He says "rivers of blood and tears are flowing" in Ukraine, "leading to death, destruction and misery".

Meanwhile a temporary ceasefire is supposed to be in place in two Ukrainian cities, to allow civilians to leave.

The first attempt at an evacuation yesterday, in the southern port of Mariupol, collapsed because of continued shelling.

Speaking through a translator in his latest video on Facebook - President Zelenskyy appealed to people in Russia - saying they have a choice whether to "stand up to evil".
