Urgent appeal for dogs to donate blood in Ireland

Could your dog become a blood donor?

UCD have launched an urgent appeal for dog blood donors as their blood bank supplies run low.

They're asking pet owners to consider whether their dogs meet the criteria to donate blood in their Veterinary Blood Donor Clinic in Dublin.

In order to donate your dog must meet a number of requirements. They must be:

  • Aged between 1-8 years old
  • Over 25kg
  • Fully vaccinated, wormed, in good health and not on any medication
  • Must not have travelled outside Ireland or the UK
  • Has never received a transfusion
  • Must have a placid temperament

Accidents, surgery and immune-mediated disease are some of the more common reasons that dogs need life saving blood transfusions. And, just like people, dogs have different blood types. Giving a matched blood transfusion minimises the risk of an adverse reaction

If you have a dog that meets these criteria that would be happy to help out, you can contact the UCD Veterinary Hospital's Blood Donation Clinic on 01 716 6137 or email them at [email protected]
