Waterford City's 1848 Tricolour Celebration was launched today.

The event is now in it's 7th year and commemorates the flying of the Irish National Flag for the first time by Waterford man Thomas Francis Meagher.

This year's programme of events gets underway on Friday March 3rd and concludes March 5th with the Flag Raising Ceremony.

Chair of the organising Committee is Paul Dower - he explained, " each and every year we are doing more things for example the schools programme that we have is after growing.

We visit schools in Waterford city and county and even in Kilkenny. We speak to about 3,000 kids every year."

Treasurer of the committee is Mags O'Connor - she told us, "there's a huge positive impact on Waterford city so we have our own locals and people come from outside Waterford.

People come from the west of the county, people come from all around. People come up from Wexford and people come down from Kilkenny.

We also have people visiting from overseas."
