Wexford MarineWatch reminds people to be safe this Christmas period

Wexford MarineWatch is one of a number of voluntary groups which provide Suicide Prevention Patrols around the country.

They primarily keep gaurd along Wexford Quays, Estuary & Harbour.

Since the group was set up, they've seen a number of incidents.

George Lawlor of Wexford MarineWatch explains to Beat News what they've dealt with, "the figure is approx in terms of incidents, we've dealt with 250. Of that, 99 would have been people intent on self harm.

Other incidents would include accidents like one man who was blown into the water. He was just watching the waves but a gust of wind came along and swept him in."

George also had this advice for people heading out to parties over the Christmas period "it's amazing the affect that alcohol has on the system. If you're feeling a bit blue, alcohol might accentuate that.

You might have words with a partner and the red mist comes down and you feel, unfortunately, you might want to do something.

My advice to anyone heading out is to stay with friends, make sure you drink responsibly and be safe."
