Wexford's first milk vending machine offers 'the freshest you can get'

A new milk vending machine has opened in North Wexford that aims to offer local produce and support sustainability.

Salt Rock Dairy Farm in Gorey have launched the county's first mobile milk vending machine that has been travelling around the local markets and has proved extremely popular selling over 400 litres last weekend.

The farm are also trying to cut down on waste by promoting the use of their glass bottles that customers will reuse each time they visit.

People can choose either a full or half litre and can even flavour their milk with a range of syrups if they want. Chocolate, strawberry and banana are some of the flavours on offer.

Speaking to Beat, owner Catherine Kinsella explains how it works

"It will be the freshest milk you'll ever get. The cows were milked at half past 5 this morning, I pasteurised at half seven and the milk was in the machine by 9 o'clock.

The whole principle is that eventually people will self-vend. We have our own, branded bottles, they're glass bottles that will be refilled. No plastic, no tetra pack, they're glass bottles that will be taken home, washed, brought back and refilled."

Catherine believes there's a number of reasons why the machine has been so popular;

"It's something local, we've taken away the plastic it's something reusable with the glass bottles. You can pop them into your dishwasher onto a 70 degree wash and they wash really well."

The unit travels around a number of locations in the county and you can keep up to date with where it is on the farm's Instagram page.
