Bennett pulls out of UCI World Championship

Carrick-on-Suir cyclist Sam Bennett won't represent his country at the UCI Road World Championships this weekend.

The former Tour de France green jersey winner was due to compete as part of the men's road race, but has now pulled out of the Belgium event having only recently recovered from injury.

He says competing this Sunday would be 'a step too far' as he continues his return.

Injury robbed the Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider a chance at defending his maillot vert at this year's event due to an ongoing knee issue, which he appeared to put behind him at the European Road Cycling Championships, however his season is now virtually over.

Bennett said: "It is always an honour to represent Ireland on the international stage. However, unfortunately, competing in this year’s World Road Championships will not be possible.

"I am very happy to be back racing pain free, and with each race, I know my fitness levels and race sharpness are improving.

"However, at this stage, a gruelling 260km-plus race is probably a step too far. I wish the Irish riders the very best this weekend and will be supporting them from afar."

Eddie Dunbar, Rory Townsend and Ryan Mullen are among those wearing the green of Ireland at this year's event.
