Corcoran relishing cup quarter-final

Wexford FC face into one of the biggest nights in their recent history tonight, as they aim to create the cup shock of the year and down St Patrick's Athletic to reach the FAI Cup quarter-final.

Having beaten Cabinteely at home, and non-league Killester Donneycarney away, tonight's game against SSE Airtricity Premier Division title contenders St Pats is certainly Ian Ryan's biggest challenge since taking over as boss earlier this year, particularly given the fact that tonight's game is in Richmond Park.

However, with only one defeat in their last five games, the Slaneysiders certainly have form on their side, heading into this big cup clash.

It's the first time the club has reached the quarter-final stages in its current guise, and the first time any Wexford League of Ireland side have gotten to the last eight since 2016, when the Youths went down 3-1 to Derry City at Ferrycarrig Park.

"This is our biggest game so far" said goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran, speaking on SportsBeat Xtra this week. "Hopefully we have a semi-final to look after it. Definitely everybody's looking forward to it, and we definitely have a good chance, when we're playing well I think we'd beat anyone.

And an ambitious Corcoran also thinks that the current cup run could be a springboard for an outside promotion push in 2022.

"I think with the recent run of form that definitely we can put it up to St Pat's. And going into next season, if we do get a cup run together we can definitely push on next year towards the playoffs."

And if Wexford do upset the odds, they could set up a South-East derby in the cup semi-finals.

It's as Waterford FC, also in fine form under Marc Bircham will be slight favourites ahead of their clash away to UCD this evening.

While the other 7.45 kickoff sees Bohemians going up against Maynooth University Town,

While Finn Harps go head to head with Dundalk, whose hopes of European football depend on a cup win, from 8pm.
