Douglas Elmes named January South East Sports Star

Kilkenny sailor Douglas Elmes has been voted the January winner of the 2016 South East Sports Star Awards with Beat 102-103 and Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa & Golf Resort, Tullow, Co. Carlow.

Elmes was nominated for the award after he claimed a bronze medal at the World Youth Sailing Championships in Malaysia. The 17 year old claimed the medal alongside his sailing partner Colin O'Sullivan in the 420 dinghy, becoming the first pair to win a world youth sailing medal for Ireland in 19 years.

The pair held off a late fight back from Australia and Argentina in the final race to claim bronze with a score of 46 points.

Douglas is a Leaving Cert student in Kilkenny College and has been sailing with Colin for 15 months. In that time they claimed a clean sweep in the Irish calender, winning all four regional championships.

He's the first monthly winner of the 2016 South East Sports Star Awards and will no go on as a nominee for the 2016 South East Sports Star of the Year Award, which will be announced at Mount Wolseley in early 2017.
