Stephen Quinn's Wexford Youths suffered their first defeat in the Women’s LOI Premier Division, despite a fighting performance against Shamrock Rovers.

Meabh Russell’s stunning leveller, either side of goals from Jessica Gargan and Aine O’Gorman, was little consolation for the four-time winners fell to a 2-1 defeat at Tallaght Stadium.

The result has the Youths in sixth position in the table, with six points from three games played.

Speaking after the game, Quinn reflected on what could have been on the night.

"I think, in that first ten or fifteen minutes, we were trying to find that second wind," he said.

"But I think we controlled the game for large periods, without having that cutting edge.

"Not all bad tonight, some good parts. It's just, for ourselves, we need to be better than that - we have higher standards than that.

"A loss is a loss, but we just have to learn and reflect and just be better."

Next up for his side is a home fixture against Athlone Town on April 15th, as the competition now breaks for the international break.

There is ample time for Russell and co to lick their wounds and concentrate on exciting the partisan support at Ferrycarrig.
