Suicide and self harm on South East agenda

Events to tackle suicide and self harm will take place in Waterford and Tipperary this evening.

The Waterford Darkness Into Light event will be launched later, while the first of a series of public meetings on suicide will be held in South Tipp.

Darkness into Light is the signature awareness and fundraising event of Pieta House, which specialises in help for people who are actively suicidal and self harming.

The 5k walk and run will begin at 4.15am on Saturday 7th May, and will be held in over 110 locations in Ireland and across the world.

This is the 4th year of the initiative, and last year over 100,000 people took part nationwide.

Meanwhile in Tipperary the first of a series of public meetings will be held to develop a Suicide Prevention Action Plan for South Tipp.

In Tipperary the suicide rate is higher than the national average.

The meeting will be hosted by community partners and takes place from 7-9pm at the Knockanrawley Resource Centre in Tipperary Town.
