A Waterford man is attempting to break a world record at the National Ploughing Championships

A Waterford man is putting the finishing touches to his world record attempt ahead of the ploughing championships next week.

John Hayes from 'special branch carvings' is one of a handful of professional wood carvers nationwide.

He's led a team of three others working to surpass a world record attempt for the longest carving in the world, at 23 metres long.

Along with a team of three others, John has constructed his masterpiece telling the story of the Viking’s journey from Norway to Waterford.

John says the temptation to try beat a world record came from broadcaster Marty Morrissey at last years ploughing championships.

John carved a wooden version of the popular broadcaster, who told him "he'd never carve anything better" - so John decided that breaking a world record was his only option next.

As you can see from the video above; John was making his way up the motorway with the carving last week, which is getting lots of attention.
