Real Housewives of Orange County star returns after four-year 'extended maternity leave'

Following a four year absence from our TV screens, returning Real Housewives of Orange County star, Lydia McLaughlin, has come clean on why she quit the show - and on the reasons behind her return.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the star admitted that she was simply too naive for the cut-throat world of reality TV.

"I did the show and, honestly, I just thought that it was acting,” Lydia said.

"That just wasn't the case - I went in really naive - it was just a lot for me to really process. And I don't think I was totally ready."

Happily, Lydia confesses that she is now in a much happier place today, having welcomed her third son, Roman.

“Life is about growing and evolving and learning," she mused, before joking that there are even lessons to be learned from screaming on national TV.

Less worried about how she'll be portrayed this time around, the fashion editor admitted that she's just back to have fun.

But 'fun' might just be a loose term if last Monday's spat with Shannon Beador is anything to go by.

Despite this, Lydia remains positive on her return to reality TV.

“It's a wild ride,” she concluded.
