23-year-old Irish man killed in action in Ukraine

A young man from County Meath has been killed in Kharkiv, whilst fighting in the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine.

23-year-old Rory Mason's family confirmed, he was killed in action last Wednesday, September 28th, close to the Russian border.

The Mason family learnt of his death from the Department of Foreign Affairs, which provides consular assistance.

Rory - a Dunboyne, Co. Meath native- had been working in Germany, to help fund his travel ambitions prior to joining the international legion.

It's understood that Rory enlisted at the outset of the war earlier this year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24th.

A statement from his family said that while they are "deeply saddened at his death, we are enormously proud of his courage and determination and his selflessness in immediately enlisting to support Ukraine".

The family are currently in the process of trying to repatriate his remains.
