7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Ecuador

At least 77 people are now known to have died after a powerful earthquake struck northwest Ecuador.

The country's vice president Jorge Glas has declared a nationwide state of emergency.

Officials say the quake - measuring 7.8 in magnitude - has caused "considerable damage" - with almost 600 people said to be injured.

A tsunami warning has also been issued in neighbouring Peru.
