€51,660 worth of cocaine seized during routine COVID-19 checkpoint in Waterford

Cocaine to the value of €51,660 has been seized by gardaí in Waterford.

The seizure was made during a routine COVID-19 checkpoint inspection.

On Monday at approximately 11:56 pm, gardaí were conducting a COVID-19 checkpoint at Grannagh Junction Roundabout, Waterford.

When the behaviour of one particular motorist raised their suspicions, a vehicle search was conducted.

During the course of the search, Gardai discovered 738 grams of suspected cocaine to the value of €51,660 inside the vehicle

The 22-year-old driver was then detained and his vehicle was taken to Waterford Garda Station for a further search under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977/84.

The suspect is now being detained in Waterford Garda Station under Section 25 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977/84, for an offence contrary to Section 15 of the same act, and under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
