It has been confirmed that a man from Carlow is on board the cruise ship the Grand Princess, currently docked in Oakland, originally bound for San Francisco.

US helicopters had flown coronavirus test kits onto the ship, where a number of Irish people are among thousands of passengers quarantined on board, including Carlow native Seamus Keating and wife Margaret.

This morning a flight, with 130 UK passengers on the ship, left bound for Birmingham airport, with the affected travelers now needing to self-isolate.

Mr Keating had been living in Scotland for 30 years, but is currently in talks with the Irish consulate to get off the ship and return across the Atlantic.

The ship is currently moored in Oakland after 21 people were diagnosed with the virus, with Donegal man Pat Kelly from Moville a second officer on the ship and therefore obligated to stay on board.

Beat has contacted the The Department of Foreign Affairs and is awaiting a response.
