Kilkenny had the highest rate of COVID in the South-East in the week after Christmas.

Statistics released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, have shown the incidence rate of the virus in each county from St Stephens’ Day to New Year’s Day.

Kilkenny has the highest incidence in the region, with 1,855 people per 100,000 testing positive on a PCR test in the period.

While neighbours Carlow also have an above-average figure, at 1,798.

1,227 people per 100,000 were infected in Tipperary, while Waterford saw 1,042 one of the lowest in the country.

However, that was bettered by Wexford, who had the second-lowest rate nationwide, at 956 per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, 92 patients with Covid-19 are in ICU today.

It's an increase of three since yesterday and up nine from the weekend.

1,062 patients with the virus are in hospitals today, which is a reduction of one since yesterday.
