In a tweet this morning, Met Eireann said "The system that may become #StormBrian will undergo explosive cyclogenesis in the next 24 hours. Deepening from 1006hPa to 961hPa."

Explosive cylcogenesis is also known as a weather bomb, and refers to a rapidly deepening area of low pressure.

In a weather advisory issued this morning, the weather service warned that the Atlantic Depression is expected to track eastwards over parts of Ireland on Saturday.

South to southeasterly winds on Friday night will veer northwesterly on Saturday and are expected to reach yellow warning criteria, at this stage. There is potential for mean wind speeds of 50 to 60km/h and gusts of 90 to 110km/h, especially in coastal counties.

The weather advisory is valid from Friday at 6pm until late on Saturday night.

It will follow today's rainfall warning which may lead to spot flooding. It is estimated that 60mm of rainfall will fall in the south over the next 24 hours alone.
