Psychiatry sector is a 'socially sanctioned drug pusher', Wexford psychotherapist says

The Psychiatry sector has given up listening to people, according to a Wexford psychotherapist.

It comes after the controversy at South Kerry CAMHS, where 46 children were harmed due to medication given by a Junior doctor.

Dr. Aidan Duggan from Wexford is a psychologist and psychotherapist.

Speaking to Beat News, he says the sector is ruining young peoples lives for their own gain:

"Psychiatry gave up listening to people because they said we can seven times the amount of money pedaling 'colourdy' pills rather than listening to people. And in the last fifteen Psychiatry has gone absolutely backward and has turned itself basically into socially sanctioned drug pushers who flush people's lives down the toilet for money and to generate money for big pharma, and that's the scandal here."

Mental Health Reform and the Children’s Rights Alliance reacted 'with concern' to the review into allegations that young people who attended South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services were prescribed inappropriate medication.

The review, published by the Health Service Executive on January 26th, examined the treatment of more than 1,300 young people who attended the services between July 2016 and April 2021.

The findings show that 227 children were exposed to the risk of significant harm, with 46 significantly harmed.

However, Dr. Duggan says the issue isn't with CAMHS services like staffing, he says the professionals like psychologists and psychotherapists as well as parents need to listen more.

Speaking to Beat News, he says the sector has gone backward:

"Psychiatry has been turned into an area for big pharma companies to make bundles of money and psychiatry have gone along with this - and the people who have suffered from this, as a result, are people with a mental health issue."

"So we need to talk about why we are referring to a part of medicine which has gone absolutely backward."
