2,600 people take part in annual Run and Walk for Life

A record breaking 2,600 people took to the streets of Waterford today to take part in the annual Run and Walk for Life.

The event is in aid of the Solas Cancer Support Centre based in Waterford which supports those affected by cancer and their families in the South East.

The race got underway at 12.30 on the Quays and finished at the People's Park where the Fun For Life event was underway.

Ann Marie Power is the communications and fundraising co-ordinator in the Solas Cancer Support Centre and she says that it's their main annual fundraising event each year.

She continued that they're an independent charity, and that the run and walk is their biggest source of income and ensures that the services provided can be maintained from year-to-year.

The money raised from last year's walk was used to expand their services and introduced new support groups that facilitate classes during the week.

They also expanded their services in Waterford and West Waterford and the funds raised this year will go towards putting new car parking spaces in place at the centre.
