Wexford Beach Initiative gets national award

The Beach Weelchair Initiative launched by Wexford County Council has picked up a national award.

The scheme, which aims to improve access for wheelchair users to the county's beaches, was recognised by winning the "Disability Services Provision Award" at the Chambers Ireland awards this week.

It was launched at Rosslare & Curraclow initially and has now been rolled out to 4 other beaches.

The scheme was launched last year by Wexford County Council and was the first of its kind in Ireland.

Access Officer Caroline Horan tells Beat News that it's gotten a great response from the public and that "the aim was to give access to anyone access to our beaches. The public have reacted brilliantly".

She also paid tribute to the support from local businesses and said that other counties have expressed interest in replicating the scheme elsewhere.
