Waterford's Craig Breen retains Citroen top spot despite difficult Rally Italy outing

Ben from Paddock Eye reports.

Citroen Racing’s Craig Breen endured a difficult Rally Italy in Sardinia over the weekend as on Thursday he was forced to retire from the day as a result of broken gearbox housing.

Damage to the gearbox housing put the Waterford native on the back foot for the rest of the event and as team principal of Citroen Racing Yves Matton said, Breen’s lack of experience at this particular event proved to be costly.

Breen ended the rally in 25th place. On Saturday he was very quick but suffered from handling issues with his C3 WRC which proved to be costly over the course of the day.

Breen heads to the next rally in Poland as the leading Citroen in the championship. The Waterford native is currently in seventh place overall on 43 points, ten clear of Hyundai motorsports Hayden Paddon.

The next event will see a change in the line-up at Citroen with the team confirming that Kris Meeke will seat out the event in Poland with the team fielding just three cars.
