Over 19,000 people made contact with domestic abuse service in 2016

Over 19,000 people made contact with Women's Aid direct services in 2016.

The group launched their annual impact report this morning.

The findings highlight that there were more than 11,000 reports of emotional abuse.

Manager of Waterford Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre Anne Scully said, "the fact that emotional abuse was one of the most talked about forms of abuse in the report doesn't surprise me.

"While there are all forms of domestic abuse, including physical - which would be the most well-known I suppose - through to financial, sexual, mental, emotional which certainly figure largely.

"Some would say the emotional abuse was the hardest to bear because it was the most hidden.

"There were no physical outward signs of it and its effects were the longest lasting and the most insidious and therefore the most difficult to heal and recover from."

The only effective bystander intervention is a non-violent one. If you see or suspect domestic abuse, visit whatwouldyoudo.ie or call 999.
