Carlow fire service appeal for people to avoid fireworks this Halloween

People in the South East are being urged not to sell, buy or light fireworks this Halloween.

It comes as a young woman sustained serious injuries after being struck by a firework in Galway recently.

Illegal fireworks are far more dangerous than one's used for organised light shows, according to Carlow Fire and Rescue Service.

Speaking to Beat News, Cheif Fire Officer at the station Liam Carroll says they are not safe;

"We hear fireworks in every town and village across the south east at the moment, they're completely illegal and there are no safety standards associated with them.

People do import them illegally from China and Asia and there are no quality standards on those fireworks and fuse lengths vary.

When you see large firework displays in big cities, they're licensed fireworks so there's very different regulations surrounding those."

He also said there are specific penalties that can be handed down to those who are selling fire works or for setting them off in a public place.
