Funeral of young mum taking place in Thurles today

The funeral is taking place this morning of a young mother who died on the way to visit her one day old baby.

Nicola Kenny was travelling to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin, when the car she was travelling in was hit by a truck.

Nicola Louise Kenny from Thurles was en route to Dublin on Monday to visit her newborn baby girl when tragedy struck.

Nicola’s aunt pulled over to allow her to take a call from Temple Street Children’s Hospital – with the good news that Lily Rose, born the day previously, was doing well.

At 12.25, a truck struck the back of the vehicle – killing Nicola, and injuring her mother Ann. Her aunt Irene Whelan remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Tributes have been paid to the 26 year old, who her employers say had an infectious smile and touched many hearts.

The funeral will take place at 11 o'clock this morning at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles with burial afterwards at St Patrick’s cemetery.

Nicola is survived by her daughter Lily Rose, her parents Patrick and Ann, brother Patrick, sister-in-law Anne Marie, extended family and wide circle of friends.
