Garda hospitalized following armed stand-off in quiet Wexford village

A garda has been taken to hospital following an armed stand-off in the quiet village of Castlebridge, Co. Wexford.

The incident began shortly after 4:30 pm on Sunday, October 23rd when a male wielding a machete-type weapon began shouting at passersby along Main Street.

It is understood the male is in his 40s and is known to gardaí.

A fleet of unmarked garda cars then arrived at the scene, where upon their arrival the assailant locked himself into an apartment close to The Old Forge Italian Restaurant.

The man then smashed through a window in the apartment and hurled a glass bottle at a garda, injuring him in the process. He was then taken to Wexford General Hospital for treatment on a laceration to his head where he is expected to make a full recovery.

An armed stand-off played out for a further two hours during which gardaí made repeated failed attempts to calm down the individual.

After some time members of the Armed Support Unit arrived and stormed the apartment.

The man was then removed from the apartment and arrested before appearing at Wexford District Court this morning.
