Hard border would 'create havoc' with live exports, says Carlow-Kilkenny TD

Live animal exports could be seriously affected if a hard border is created by Brexit.

Representatives from the live export industry will meet with the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine later today to discuss problems facing the sector.

Chair of the Committee, Fine Gael TD Pat Deering, says any border would create havoc with live exports.

"It's an issue that we need to take an awful lot of care of when dealing with that matter," said Mr Deering.

"It is something which is crucially important."

Companies involved in exporting live animals say any new border controls could decimate their industry.

Mr Deering said that the issues facing the sector could also impact consumers.

"We are looking at World Trade Organisation tariffs being imposed on our beef products of up to 60% which would make our beef industry totally uncompetitive.
