Increase in number of people caught driving under the influence

Gardaí in Waterford say motorists can expect to see even more checkpoints on the roads.

It's following an increase in the numbers of people caught driving under the influence of drink and drugs.

Superintendent Chris Delaney is from Waterford Garda Station, he said "there has been an increase in relation to drivers found under the influence of an intoxicant - be it drink or drugs.

It's disappointing that those figures are up but it's something that we really want to nip in the bud in essence.

Part of our strategy in that is extra enforcement - additional enforcement and as part of that there will be a significant increase in the number of checkpoints and enforcement within the county.

People have probably noticed additional checkpoints - particularly at weekends and selected times we see an increase in our own figures.

We have to address that - it's an enforcement issue."
