Kilkenny family settle action against St. Luke's hospital over death of woman

St. Luke's hospital has apologised to the family of a Kilkenny woman who died from a heart attack after the hospital failed to diagnose a known complication of surgery.

Her family settled an action for €250 thousand euro, which was approved by the High Court yesterday afternoon.

68-year-old Bridget Tallis from Lacken Drive in Kilkenny died in March 2015, a week after being fitted with a pacemaker in her heart at a Dublin clinic.

The High Court heard that six days after her surgery, Mrs. Tallis became ill and went to the emergency department at St. Luke's hospital in Kilkenny for treatment.

She was treated for sepsis and suspected kidney failure even though she showed clear signs of a possible perforation.

The High court was told that the hospital was aware of her recent surgery and failed to diagnose a well-recognised complication of a pacemaker fitting.

As a result, Mrs. Tallis had a heart attack and died two days later.

Her family settled an action against St. Luke's yesterday for a sum of €250 thousand euro.

The hospital issued an apology to the family and said steps had been taken in respect to the inquest recommendations.
