One in eight say they suspect they know someone driving without insurance

A survey for the AA shows one in eight motorists suspect they know someone who's driving without insurance.

A poll of over 2,500 drivers found Irish drivers are deeply frustrated by insurance fraud and want better enforcement measures to tackle it.

The AA's Barry Aldworth says technology does exist to help gardaí, but until recently they didn't have a strong enough database to make it effective.

"Policing uninsured driving became very difficult for them because of the lack of sufficient technology and the significant cuts to garda resources that were made," he said.

"Then you saw some people who will try to take advantage of the situation anywhere they can who said 'well, if the risk of me being caught is very low, I'm going to chance my arm driving without insurance'".
