Over 9,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland today

9,371 new Covid cases have been confirmed today.

There are 2,100 PCR-confirmed cases, while 7,271 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.

Figures for the weekend have also been released today, which stand at 11,253 for Saturday and 11,266 for Sunday.

The number of people in hospital has increased to 1,042 with 42 in ICU.

Meanwhile, there are concerns Covid numbers could surge again next week, as case numbers climb and St Patrick's Day celebrations get under way.

Over a thousand people in Irish hospitals have the virus, the highest figure in almost two months.

A Fine Gael senator is calling for the reintroduction of compulsory mask-wearing, as hospital figures rise.

There were 1,042 people with the virus in hospitals this morning - the highest figure since mid-January.
