Priest dies after "freak accident" in parochial house

A priest in his 50s has died tonight after what has been described as a "freak accident" in county Laois.

Father John Cummins, the parish priest in Abbeyleix, died in the incident at his home in the town this afternoon at around 3.30pm.

RTE is reporting that the priest's car went out of control in the driveway of his home.

Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

In a statement this evening, the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Denis Nulty, paid tribute to the priest and said his death "is a tremendous loss to all of us."

Father Cummins had worked with the ACCORD service in Carlow and at I.T. Carlow.
