South East drowning rescuers honoured in water safety ceremony

Irish people who have saved others from drowning are being honoured at a special reception today.

Irish Water Safety will pay tribute to the 31 rescuers at a ceremony in Dublin Castle.

There are seven recipients from the South East, including five people from County Carlow.

Two other rescuers, one from Waterford and one from Kilkenny, will also be honoured

Roger Sweeney with Irish Water Safety explains more:

"Every year we present these awards to people who save others from drowning.

"So these awards celebrate the fact that although we have 11 drownings every month, it would be far worse but for these remarkable people."
