Wait times for dental care in Wexford branded 'outrageous'

A Wexford TD says delays in getting dental treatment under anesthetic are unacceptable.

Johnny Mythen says people are having to wait over three years to get the proper treatment at Wexford General hospital.

The former Councillor says it's outrageous that vulnerable people like children and those with additional needs are left waiting such a long time.

Speaking to Beat News, the Sinn Féin Deputy recounted a story of one Wexford family:

"A parent came in with his child who is 26 years of age. He is non verbal and he needs his teeth done immediately and he was actually told it'll be three years plus before the child is seen to. You can imagine the parents of that child looking at the child day in day out in dire pain. Taking painkillers for it is not the answer for him."

Mythen says it's a problem across the country but is significant in Wexford with waiting lists 3 and half years plus. He says there's no excuse for it:

"Obviously covid would be part of the problem, but it's not all the problem even before covid this was happening and it needs to be addressed immediately."
