Workers will be able to take up to five days unpaid leave to look after sick children or a family member.

The Irish Independent reports the new work-life balance laws will be brought to cabinet this week.

Meanwhile parents of children under 12, or a person caring for a relative, will have the right to request reduced or flexible working hours.

Employees will have to give six months notice and employers must respond to the request within four weeks.
