GAA stars break Covid restrictions to group train in secret

By Joleen Murphy

A number of Dublin GAA stars have broken Covid-19 restrictions by having an early morning training session together.

At least nine players were involved in a series of group training drills at a GAA pitch in Balgriffin yesterday before 7am.

The Irish Independent reports the session which was overseen by a coach as a man appeared to keep watch close to the entrance to the facility.

The session took place around 12 hours after Croke Park issued a circular to all clubs and counties, warning that any breaches of group training could put the GAA’s plans for a return 'in serious jeopardy'.

It was announced earlier this week that the GAA hope to release a revised fixture roadmap by the end of next week.

They've given a cautious greeting to the government announcement that inter-county training can resume on April 19th.

However, it had already been warned that any breaches of that start date will not be tolerated.

This comes after Gardaí confirmed they were investigating a possible breach of Covid-19 rules by a GAA club in West Cork.

In the Taoiseach's announcement on Tuesday it was said that inter county training will be permitted to resume from April 19th.

It means the Allianz Leagues could start on a regional basis from the middle of May.

It's likely that the senior inter county championships will be played along similar lines to last year, with knockout in Football and qualifiers in Hurling.

This would allow All Ireland finals to be potentially wrapped up by August ahead of the start of the club season.
