League of Ireland First Division preview: Wexford visit Cork, Waterford return to the RSC

Game week 25 in the League of Ireland First Division is nearly upon us, as eyes in the South East await the whistle for another fascinating weekend of domestic football.

Wexford FC have been enjoying a great run of form and have collected three wins in as many games, with two coming back-to-back in the league.

Last week's victory against promotion rivals Treaty United propelled James Keddy's side into fifth position - amongst those vying for promotion to the Premier Division.

His side will look to take that form to Cork with a fixture against third-placed Cobh Ramblers on Friday, August 4.

Cobh have been impressive in 2023 and holds breathing space over fourth-placed Athlone. Shane Keegan's side's home form rivals that of second-placed Waterford FC, with confidence in a group of talented young players.

But Wexford have cultivated a talented group themselves. The Ferrycarrig outfit has the fourth-best away record in the division, with confidence in a result against their Munster rivals.

Kick-off in St.Colman's Park is set for 7:45 pm.

Waterford welcomes Kerry FC to the RSC, with Keith Long looking for his side to claim a first league victory in three outings.

A 93rd-minute Cameron Cresswell equaliser salvaged a point for the Blues against Athlone in their previous fixture, with Long recognising a disjointed start from his side.

His team sits 18 points behind leaders Galway United and enjoy an eight-point lead over Cobh in third place. Even at this stage, eyes are firmly set on the possibility of a South East meeting in the promotion playoffs.

Action is set to get underway at 7:45 on Friday.

John Caulfield's Galway are on the road this weekend to face off against Finn Harps.

As we've touched upon above, this imperious side holds an astonishing lead at the head of the table, with few believing they will capitulate.

But you never know in football, and the Blues will keep fighting to keep the pressure on their rivals.

This one is set for an 8:00 pm start in Ballybofey on Friday.

Ian Ryan will be looking for his Bray side to recover from their recent run of poor form and end a run of four games without victory.

They host Athlone at the Carlise grounds, having slipped outside the promotion playoff spots.

Kick-off is set for 7:45 on Friday.

The final fixture of the weekend pits Treaty United at home to Longford Town.

Following last week's defeat to Wexford, Treaty have slipped four points behind the final playoff spot.

A win is crucial, and the Limerick faithful will be hoping to channel some of the ferocity of their triumphant hurlers.

The action gets underway at 7:45 pm on Friday.
