Dáil to approve legislation to remove ban on naming murdered children

By Joleen Murphy

The Dáil is expected to approve legislation today that will remove the ban on naming murdered children.

The media aren't allowed to name them if someone has been charged - while the accused also can't be identified in some cases.

The Department of Justice says the bill should take effect by the end of this month, after the Seanad approves amendments made to it.

Sinn Fein spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Kathleen Funchion has been speaking to families in support of the change.

"There is a number of families in the Carlow-Kilkenny region that would be effected by this.

"One man in particular described it as frustrating and traumatising, and that it felt like they were being silenced or gagged and that the rights of the families to free speech was somehow less important than the rights of the perpetrator.

"I think its really important that we take that on board."
