Extended access to Netflix for Irish prisoners

Irish prisoners have been given extended access to Netflix behind bars, according to The Irish Prison Service.

Inmates were first allowed to watch the streaming service while stuck in cells when Covid struck in 2020.

However, inmates cannot choose between the hundreds of Netflix shows available, instead, one show is selected by the chief officer and it is then made available in every cell as another option to the free-to-air channels.

At first, Netflix was only to be used as a temporary solution during Covid lockdowns, to help ease the boredom of long hours spent in cells.

Now that restrictions have eased, an IPS spokesperson said that a decision has been taken to carry on providing the service.

The Irish Sun is reporting Netflix is now being used in all twelve state prisons, costing 120 euro per month.

The IPS says the use of televisions in cells has helped dramatically reduce incidents of self-harm and suicide.
