Gardaí urge people in the South East to protect their homes this Christmas

We're being urged to take small steps to protect our homes and our property during the winter months.

Burglaries traditionally increase during the dark evenings and particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

In winter, around half of all burglaries occur between 3pm and midnight.

Cash and Jewellery were the two objects targetted the most in burglaries.

Speaking to Beat news, Carlow Kilkenny and Waterford Crime Prevention SGT Peter McConnon, says simple steps can go a long way:

"Try and create conditions where that burglar is unsure and does not want to go near it in fear that they might get caught because 95% plus of burglaries are opportunistic in nature so if we have a light on between 5pm and 10pm, it makes your house occupied even if it's not."
