Half a million now live in the South East

The population of the South East has broken half a million people.

According to Census 2016 figures, 511,070 people live here in the region, an increase of just over 13,000 in the last five years.

All five counties saw a growth in population figures.

Wexford remains the most populated county in the South East at 149,605, with over 116,000 in Waterford.

Kilkenny is next on the list at 99,000, followed by South Tipp at 89,000 and Carlow just under 57,000.

Nationwide the population of Ireland has risen to 4.76 million people, an increase of 170,000.
