Mattie McGrath: Tipp County Council ignoring hundreds of planning objections from residents

A Tipperary TD has slammed his local county council for their ‘bullish’ attitude when it comes to development.

Speaking in the Dáil, Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on more transparency from county councils on how they purchase and zone land for housing projects.

McGrath says Tipperary County Council have ignored hundreds of objections from local residents from road works in the county town.

"We have roadworks at the moment in Tipperary Town, where there were 291 submissions go in (to object), which are sought, and then they fly in the face of them, and refuse to listen to the 75% of people against the works. There's a bullish attitude by Tipperary County Council.

However, McGrath says this isn't the first time the council has proceeded despite the wishes of the local people - and in one example from Nenagh recounted in the Dáil recently, the courts.

"They (the residents) were forced to take action illegally, and that's not right. The County Council kept on building these house, and insisted on building on a green area, and the residents were forced to take them to court.

"And the County Council kept building, in spite of the fact that they were legally told to stop until the decision was made in the courts.

"That's very wrong, and it's not anyway democratic or fair."
