NPHET recommends pubs and restaurants close at 5pm every day

NPHET has recommended pubs and restaurants close at 5pm as soon as possible, as the Omicron variant spreads here.

They're also calling for indoor and outdoor events to be capped at half-capacity.

NPHET have also proposed that cinemas, theatres and sporting events should also be subject to a 5pm curfew and be capped at half capacity.

It's understood close contacts of confirmed cases, who haven't yet received their booster, will have to restrict their movements.

But they haven't recommended the early closure of schools for the Christmas holidays, or further limits on household visits.

The government will now consider the recommendations, and a decision's likely to be made today.

The vaccination rollout for most kids aged 5 to 11 is due to begin from January 10th.

However children in that age group who're high risk can register online from December 28th.

Labour's education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Riordáin says schools would be better suited to give them the jab.
